The Maple Palmate is a shrub belonging to the Aceraceae family. It is originally from the Far East (Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China).

It is commonly called a Japanese Maple.

The genus name is coined from the Latin term acer (hard, rough) for the particular hardness of the timber.

The specific Latin epithet palmatum (in the shape of a palm) refers to palmate shape of the leaves. The varietal name is derived from the Latin terms Purpureum (purple) in relation to dark red color of the foliage.
