The generic name Pleioblastus Fortunei, is coined by the union of ancient Greek words. It is commonly known as Dwarf or Japanese Bamboo, esteemed for its numerous creeping shoots, which form dense bushes similar to the more classic bamboo.
The Scottish botanist Robert Fortune (1812-1880), traveler and hunter of plants, introduced numerous plants from the Far East to Europe.
